The Tim Cole Memorial Park, situated on the southwest corner of 19th Street and University Avenue in Lubbock, was officially unveiled on September 17. The park honors Tim Cole, a former Texas Tech University student who had hoped to study law upon graduation. Cole was wrongfully convicted of raping a fellow student in 1985, and served 13 years of his 25-year sentence before he died in prison. He was exonerated posthumously in 2009, thanks to hundreds of man hours contributed by Texas Tech Law students through the Innocence Project of Texas clinical program. Our students obtained a written confession from the actual perpetrator that cleared Cole’s name and set the stage for a more thorough investigation. Dean Darby Dickerson and Dr. Juan Munoz later presented the Cole family, including his sister, Karen Kennard (’88), with a framed TTU veteran graduation stole embroidered with the Texas Tech Law logo to honor Tim’s military service and unrealized aspiration of a law degree.
